Media violence is a huge and increasing problem for the modern society and it has a negative and strong impact on teenagers. Media violence reflected in the television shows or movies, cartoons, games, music and news etc (Murray, 2008). It influences behaviour of every teenager; it augments the capacity of teenagers to tolerate and accept violent and abusive behaviour of others. Offline violence is normal as compare to seeing violence in television and cartoons and in playing games. There are various factors relevant to media violence which influences teenagers for very serious crimes. The present research focuses on media violence among teenagers (Jackson, Brown and L'Engle, 2007). Therefore, research spotlights on reasons and impacts of media violence as well as solution for resolving this research problem. Along with this, key references and various views of different researcher are also describing in the following paragraphs of the research project.
The present research on media violence among teenagers; as per the objective of research qualitative and quantitative research techniques will be appropriate for researcher (Barr, 2004). Qualitative research is significant because it helps in determining the behaviour of teenagers towards the violence of media. On other hand quantitative research technique will help in determining the relationship of media violence with health and mental problem of teenagers (Report on violence among adolescents and young adults, 2014.).
Research outline specification is a non-detailed design or arrangement of whole investigation (Burke, 2007). The present research focuses on media violence among teenagers it outline includes different tasks and activities which are conducted by research during the investigation. It comprises aims and objectives of whole research, project rational for the selection of research problem and subject, review of back ground studies of research scholars, research questions or hypothesis which help in conducting complete study in an efficient manner. Including this outline specification also comprises methodology of research, data collection techniques and analysis of collected information, possible outcome form selected subject and recommendations (Fink, 2000).
The current investigation is focusing on media violence among teenagers; researcher has been chosen this subject for their whole research because it has a wide scope for future research studies (Beiske, 2003). Along with this, exposure of violence thorough media has negative impact and significant risk on the health and behaviour of children and teenagers. Media violence is very challenging problem for the whole nation as well as health and mental condition of teenager, so researcher has been chosen the particular subject of media violence among teenagers. Considering this society requires appropriate recommendations for resolving various negative impacts of media violence on teenagers. Thus, all these are various factors which influence researcher for choosing this subject for research project (Corbetta and et al., 2008).
It is the most important part of the research on media violence among teenagers because it provides a base for whole research (Gill and Johnson, 2002). In the key references researcher will review the background studies of past researcher on similar subject of media violence among teenagers.
Exposure of violence to media: As per the study of Beresin, 2014 which states that “exposure of violence is done through different medias but majorly it includes television, movies, music and video games and cartoon channels which affect the life of teenagers”. It means all these medium plays an important role in increasing violence among teenagers and affects their life. Similarly Hall, 2013 states that “Sexual violence among teenager increases through the violent sexual and control feature length films”. This study helps in analysing the impact of sexual media violence among teenagers. Along with this Funk, 2004 explains that “Video games and internet also plays an important role in medial violence and exposure among teenagers”. It denotes that teenager generally interested and addicted towards playing video games and internet surfing in which they follows the phenomenon of killing villains and other opposite player and continuous shooting in games, etc. All these things increase the violence through media among teenagers (Ridley, 2012). Therefore, media has a huge and strong role in exposure of violence among teenagers.
Impact of media violence on teenagers: It is the major section of the whole study which helps in determining various impacts of media violence on teenagers. Review of literature states that media violence has a negative impact on health and behaviour of teenagers. According to Media Violence, 2009 which states that “exposure of media violence is associated with the various mental and health problem of teenagers, such as aggressive and violent behaviour, harassment, fear from various situations, depressions, frightening and disturbance during the sleeping timing, etc” (Media Violence, 2009). Therefore, media violence has a negative impact on the life and behaviour of teenagers. It increases teenager towards the violent behaviour and other aggressive nature. On other hand Report on violence among adolescents and young adults, 2014 says that “The media violence has a strong relation with various other things of teenagers such as calcium intake, bone mass, lead ingestion, lower IQ, smoking, lung cancer, etc” (Report on violence among adolescents and young adults, 2014). It means exposure of violence through media has also a negative impact on health and mental problem of teenagers it increases various addictions among teenagers such as cigarette smoking and alcohol addiction etc which lead various serious deceases such as cancer, low calcium in bones, etc. In contract study of Funk, 2004 states that “Media violence adversely affects and demonstrates the ability of teenagers of developing discrimination between fantasy and reality of life” (Funk, 2004). Similarly Zur, 2014 explains that “Several psychological and physiological processes are also affected by the media violence and it influences aggressive attitudes, beliefs, behaviour, perceptions and emotions of teenagers” (Zur, 2014).
As per the Beresin, 2014 who states that “media and comic violence are dangerous for teenagers because this type of exposure provides positive feelings to teenagers by hurting others by their violent behaviour”. Thus, media violence leads the criminal activities of teenagers, victims, and other dangerous activities of teenagers. Similarly Hall, 2013 describes that “victim of media violence is a strong motivation for teenagers to carry a weapon and other harmful equipments with them” (Hall, 2013). As per the Zur, 2014 states that “violent video games and internet increases the aggressive behaviour and thinking of teenagers as well as it decreases the social behaviour of teenagers” (Zur, 2014). Therefore, media violence declines the overall social activities of teenagers which are very negative for whole society development. On other hand Funk, 2004 critically evaluates that “violence through video games are larger harmful for teenagers as compare to televisions and movies”. However, Report on violence among adolescents and young adults, 2014 concludes that “Some pro-social video games augment the social attitudes and behaviour of teenagers” (Report on violence among adolescents and young adults, 2014).
Therefore, review of various studies states that media violence has negative impact on health, behaviour, culture, beliefs, attitudes, nature, perceptions of teenagers. Along with this it leads various criminal activities in teenagers such as homicide, suicide and shock, sexual crimes, murders, shooting and fighting, etc (Schutt, 2006).
Solutions of media violence and its impact on teenager’s behaviour and health
According to the above discussed negative impact of media violence on teenager’s health and behaviour there are various solutions also. As per the Hall, 2013 which states that “residency training and conferences on different media programs and channels, grand rounds and medical education camp and courses on important venue is the major solution for reducing the impact of media violence among teenagers” (Hall, 2013). On other hand Beresin, 2014 states that “remove televisions, internet connection, video games from teenager’s rooms is also an important solution of media violence” (Beresin, 2014). Similarly by choosing thoughtful and education channels and reviewing them among teenagers are also very helpful for removing negative impact of media violence on teenagers (Nykiel, 2007). Including this by providing appropriate education regarding violence, eliminate the use of violence in commix as well as reduces the sexual violence in different medium are also appropriate solution for reducing all these negative impact on teenagers (Goddard and Melville, 2004).
The major aim of research is determining impacts of media violence among teenagers and identifying its solutions.
Significant objectives of the research are as follows:
As per the research subject and objectives major research questions are as follows:
As per the research aims and objectives researcher will follow appropriate research methodology for whole investigation for sample selection, collection and analysis of data (Crowther and Lancaster, 2012). For current research researcher will use random numbers sampling technique for select an appropriate sample of physiologist and parents which provides information regarding the impacts of media violence among teenegers. It is suitable sampling design for study because it provides an equal chance for each and every unit of the whole population for choosing as a sample. Methodology includes primary and secondary data collection technique for gathering all information relevant to the media violence among teenagers. Along with this research is based on the qualitative data of the human behaviour and perception on media violence (Fowler, 2001). So, for analyse the collected data researcher will use thematic and statistical analysis techniques.
Research plan can define as process of conducting investigation on media violence among teenagers (Bryman and Bell, 2007). It comprises various activities with specific duration and dates. For current research report whole research plan and schedules of each and every task can be represented by a Gantt chart, which is as follows:
As per the above Gantt chart the whole research project on media violence among teenagers will take 6 months and 18 day for completion (Creswell, 2013).
The success of research study is based on the matching the available resources with question of investigation in an optimum way (Huesmann and et al., 2003). It means that optimum allocation and uses of resources as per the requirements is essential for effective research project. Considering the formulated research plan with specific aims and objectives as well as research methods will help in resolving the question of study on media violence among teenagers.Along with this researcher have been using appropriate terms of references which help in attaining all requirements of investigation study (Bijvank, Konijn and Bushman, 2009). In order to maintain the ethical issues and considerations researcher will focus on match the resources of data collection and other with appropriate ethical boundaries which help in resolving the research problem of media violence among teenagers.
Appropriate implementation of planned research is very significant for success of every research (Strasburger, 2006.). In this stage researcher needs to make sure about that every activities will be completed as per the planned schedule or approved research plan. Along with this implementation of research also needs to check the reliability and validity of whole investigation. For testing the validity of research study researcher will use pilot research tool; it can be defined as a feasibility studies which help in ensuring that planned research ideas and techniques are sound and help in conducting a successful investigation (Perry, 1998). Along with this in the research plan implementation reliability of the collected data will be measured by estimations. Estimation will help in determining the variation in the test score due to the errors in measurements as well as due to the true score. Thus, this estimation will provide assistance in checking reliability of the collected data and research (Ireland, Webb and Coombs, 2005).
It is a very significant tool for whole research of media violence among teenagers. For current investigation researcher will use both primary and secondary data collection techniques (Walsh and Gentile, 2001). For collecting the data researcher will choose an appropriate sample from the entire population of teenagers by using random sampling method. This sampling technique will help in determining most suitable sample for complete study. After choosing an appropriate sample researcher will focus on data collection by different data collection techniques (Report on violence among adolescents and young adults, 2014).
Primary data collection techniques will obtain those data which is not discovered yet by other researcher on media violence and its impact on teenagers (Funk, 2004). For collecting the primary data researcher will use questionnaire, survey technique and personal interviews. Questionnaire contains various questions relevant to the media violence and survey is based on this questionnaire. Through the personal interview of each sample unit of physiologist and parents of teenagers researcher can collect the information regarding the exposure of violence through media and its impacts on teenagers. Thus, primary data collection techniques will help in providing new insights and information for research which provides assistance in final conclusion (Merriam, 2009).
Secondary information is also very significant for investigation on media violence among teenagers. As per the research objectives background research will provide an insight for determining the major exposure of media violence as well as its impact on teenager’s behaviour and health (Hall, 2013). Therefore, for collecting secondary data researcher will use literature review of past research studies of various researchers.
But at the time of data collection researcher needs to make sure about the various ethical issues relevant to the data gathering. Along with this researcher requires to making sure about the reliability and validity of the data by taking appropriate resources (Beresin, 2014).
After collecting primary and secondary data researcher will use different research techniques for analyses the whole collected data and outcomes on media violence among teenagers. As per the above discussion project is based on qualitative and quantitative research techniques so for data analysis researcher will use thematic and statistical analysis respectively (Merriam, 2009). Thematic analysis is most significant technique for analysing the behaviour of teenagers and impact of media violence. Thematic analysis technique is based on the charts, graphs, themes and diagrams on the basis of the collected data for media violence. Along with this researcher will use SPSS software for statistical analysis on different quantitative information. Researcher will use correlation coefficient technique for identifying the relationship between media violence and teenager’s health and behaviour (Types of Reliability, 2006). Therefore, complete data analysis help in determining the impact of media violence on teenager’s perceptions and their behaviour as well as relationship between media violence and their behaviour. Therefore, the complete data analysis helps in concluding final findings and results of media violence among teenagers (Media Violence, 2009).
Above research project is on media violence among teenagers and its main aims and objectives comprises determination of exposure of violence through media, impacts of media violence in teenagers and different solutions. Conducted study through researcher has appropriate outcomes which satisfies the requirements of aims and objectives. As per the literature review and data analysis violence is mostly disclose through the various media such as television, video games, cartoons, internet, comic, etc (Media Violence, 2009).
Along with this it has negative impact on health and behaviour of teenagers. It influences the aggressive and violent behaviour of teenager, sexual harassment, depression, shocks, disturbing during sleeping time, etc. In addition media violence has strong relationship with mental problems; cigarette smoking, alcohol addictions as well as it motivates teenagers to carry out weapons, and provides positive feeling in hurting others (Report on violence among adolescents and young adults, 2014.). It decreases the capability of teenagers for discrimination of real and fantasy life as well as it augments murder, suicide, shock, sexual crimes, shooting and fighting, etc. Evaluation of the various outcomes also provides different solutions for reducing the negative impact of media violence on teenagers (Zur, 2014).
As per the evaluation of findings and outcomes researcher provides various recommendations for resolving the problem of media violence among teenager; these are as follows:
Various entrainment media authority should arrange residency training and conferences on different media channel programs and daily shows.
The whole research project will be presented by researcher in a professional and appropriate manner. Researcher will use the oral presentation and written report for presenting of research outcomes and findings because it is an appropriate way for providing whole information regarding the investigation on media violence among teenagers (Walsh and Gentile, 2001). Along with this it gives opportunities to audience for asking question regarding the any doubts in aims, objectives and final outcomes. In addition written report will provide assistance to those researcher which wants to do research on similar subjects in coming future.
